4 Foundations for Children's Health

National Child Health Day is celebrated on the first Monday in October. As a national observance, it was first recognized in 1928 by President Calvin Coolidge. The goal of National Child Health Day is to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of children, not only for themselves but for society as a whole. Parents set their children up for success when they lay down a good foundation of health in early childhood. It is not just doctor’s visits that make for good health. Here are four things parents can do to help their children be healthier throughout their lives.

Create a Circle of Relationships

Children of all ages need consistent and nurturing interactions with adults. Friends and family members help children develop strong adaptive systems as their world changes. Professional relationships with doctors, dentists, teachers, and other leaders help children learn to be part of society and adjust to different norms.

Offer Healthy Foods

Kids are picky eaters, so it can be challenging to get them to eat their fruits and vegetables. Providing a rainbow of colors and keeping mealtimes fun can encourage children to try new foods. Kids watch the adults in their lives and tend to mimic them. When you eat healthy foods and have a good relationship with food, it can encourage a child to be more adventurous.

Provide Safe Environments

It almost goes without saying that we want our kids to be safe where they go, but it can be difficult to monitor all the locations where your children spend time. Teaching kids to share their concerns with you can help you make sure your children play in the safest places, free of toxins, fear, and safety risks.

Help Children Get Excited About Exercise

For many adults, exercise has a negative connotation. For kids, exercise is simply playtime. The adults in a child’s life need to help him or she learn that bodies need movement. We do not have to be the best to enjoy an activity. Just enjoy life with play to stay healthy.

Commit to Better Health for All Children

Parents are not the only ones who should be concerned about children’s health. Everyone benefits when children grow up healthy. Communities have better outcomes when they promote child well-being. Employers benefit from programs that promote healthy children. Schools that focus on supporting healthy children can use their resources more effectively.
