What Parents Should Know

As a new parent, you read about and talk to other parents about what milestones to expect, but you may not consider dental milestones. In fact, your child starts growing teeth while they're still in vitro and are born with up to 20 teeth that have not yet erupted. Here are other things to know about your child's baby teeth and how to care for them.

When To Expect Baby Teeth

Teething is often one of the most frustrating times for babies and parents. Your baby will start to teethe at around six months of age. This is the period when their primary teeth erupt from their gums and is often painful.

Teething Symptoms

Every baby has different symptoms while they're getting their baby teeth, but the most common include drooling, low-grade fever, rashes, swelling around the gums, and irritability. Cold washcloths and rubber teethers can help ease the discomfort your child is experiencing. Try to be patient with your little one while their teeth come in and remember they'll be back to their smiling, happy selves in no time.

Dental Hygiene and Baby Teeth

You don't have to wait for your baby's first dental checkup to encourage getting into a healthy dental routine. Use a soft, clean cloth to wipe your baby's gums each day to get rid of any residue or buildup. After their first teeth come in, you can begin gently brushing with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Once your child's teeth have come in, they'll start losing them around age 6 and continue to lose them until they're about 13 years of age.

Don't forget to schedule your child to have a dental checkup as soon as their first baby teeth come in. Give us a call to set up your child's dental appointment so we can keep them on track to good oral hygiene.
